# Connect Linear to Cogno

> Connect Linear so each Project works in the Linear teams you choose, picks up new issues and comments, and agents can work with issues.

## At a glance

| | |
| - | - |
| **Direction** | Two-way — Cogno picks up new issues, assignments and comments; agents change issues only when you allow it. |
| **Connect with** | Linear OAuth — one click. |
| **Who can set up** | Any workspace member except viewers. |
| **You'll need** | A Linear account in the Linear workspace you want to connect. |

Connect Linear so each Project can choose the Linear teams it works in. Cogno picks up new issues, assignments and comments in those teams, and agent runs in the Project can search and read their issues and — if you allow it — create issues, update them and add comments. Nothing outside the Project's selected teams is in reach of its agents.

## Before you start

* You're a member of the target workspace with a role other than viewer.
* You're signed in to the Linear account that can see the teams you want Cogno to use.

## Connect Linear in Cogno

**1. Find Linear**

Open **Integrations** and find **Linear**.

**2. Authorize Linear**

Click **Connect**. Cogno opens Linear's authorization screen in your browser. Approve access for your Linear workspace.

**3. Confirm the connection**

Back in Cogno, the Linear page opens. The connection row shows your Linear workspace name marked **Connected**.

## See the Linear teams Cogno can use

The **Linear teams** section lists the teams your connection can see — each with its name, key (for example `ENG`), a **Private** badge for private teams, and a link that opens it in Linear. **Open … in Linear** next to the section title opens your Linear workspace. The connection row shows when the list was last refreshed (**Last synced** — or **Not synced yet**).

Cogno fills this list right after you connect and refreshes it every six hours. To refresh it now, open the **⋯** menu on the connection row and choose **Sync teams** — refreshing takes a few seconds.

## Choose Linear teams for a Project

Each Project picks its own Linear teams:

**1. Open the Project's settings**

Open the Project and go to its settings, then find **Linear** under **Project integrations**.

**2. Select teams**

Expand **Linear** and choose the teams this Project works in under **Teams**.

The picker offers the same teams as the **Linear teams** section on the integration page.

> [!NOTE]
>
> A Project that has selected no Linear team works with every team Cogno can see, for both the Linear Tools and the activity described below. Select teams to narrow it.

## What Cogno picks up from Linear

Cogno reacts to three kinds of activity, made by a person:

| Activity | When it counts |
| - | - |
| New issue | Someone creates an issue. |
| Assignment | An issue is assigned to someone. Other updates — state, labels, title — and unassigning are not picked up. |
| Comment | Someone comments on an issue. |

Each one goes to the Projects that selected the issue's team; a Project with no Linear selection receives activity from every team. Activity on the same issue is grouped into one item while it waits. Changes made by Cogno itself or by other apps and integrations are ignored.

## Set agent tool access

The **Agent tools** section controls what Engine-managed runs may do through this connection. Choose **Block**, **Ask**, or **Allow** for each capability. Changes apply to the next run; disconnecting stops access immediately.

| Capability | What it allows | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Read Linear** | List teams, and search and read issues with their comments in the Project's selected Linear teams. | **Allow** |
| **Write to Linear** | Create and update issues and add comments in the Project's selected Linear teams. | **Allow** |

Under each capability, **Tools** lists the exact Tools it grants: `linear_list_teams`, `linear_search_issues` and `linear_get_issue` for reading; `linear_create_issue`, `linear_update_issue` and `linear_add_comment` for writing. Set **Write to Linear** to **Ask** if you want to approve each change. The workspace setting is the ceiling: a Project can inherit or reduce it for this connection, but can't raise it. See [Set Workspace Tool permissions](/docs/integrations.md#set-workspace-tool-permissions).

## Disconnect

Open the **⋯** menu on the connection row and choose **Disconnect**, then confirm.

## Common states

| State | Meaning | Next action |
| - | - | - |
| **No Linear teams yet.** | The list hasn't been filled, or your account can't see any team | Choose **Sync teams**; check your team membership in Linear |
| A team you just created is missing | Cogno hasn't refreshed since it was created | Choose **Sync teams** |
| **Failed to load Linear teams.** | Cogno couldn't read the team list | Reload the page |
| An agent says no Linear team is in reach for the Project | The Project's Linear selection is empty | Select teams in the Project's settings |
